School Participation in Club Read Doubles in 2019

Dion’s Pizza and the Albuquerque Isotopes recently closed the chapter on the 2019 Club Read program, awarding four students grand prizes. In its 17th year, 129 schools participated, twice as many as 2018.

Kaidan Krenik (4th grade, SY Jackson Elementary), Benjamin Martinez (Pre-K, A Child’s Garden Preschool), Logan Piper (Kindergarten, St. Mary’s Grade School), and Mackarley Targhetta (Kindgergarten, homeschooled) were this year’s recipients.

The quartet was among over 1,000 students who submitted second scorecards, which required each student to read at least 12 books. A total of 4,039 first scorecards were submitted. In total, participants read 30,240 books over the nearly five-month long program that began in March.

Armijo Elementary was the winner of the school competition. The school will receive a $300 check for library supplies with the school librarian earning a $50 Dion’s gift card.

The four grand prize winners learned of their reward by a surprise visit from Orbit, the Isotopes Mascot. Each winner received suite-level tickets to an Isotopes game, the honor to throw out the ceremonial first pitch, an autographed baseball, one customized Isotopes jersey, a booklet of Isotopes Park Baseball Bucks, free Dion’s pizza to enjoy during the game, and a $50 Dion’s gift card.

“The popularity and success of Club Read and its impact on youth literacy in our community continues to grow,” said Dion’s CEO Mark Herman. “We are ecstatic that we doubled the number of schools involved from 2018.”
