No Dogs Allowed in The Robbie Jones Memorial La Casa de los Gatos…
The cats at Animal Humane New Mexico are already loved and well cared for as they await their forever homes, and now, our feline friends enjoy one of the most comfortable residences on campus: The Robbie Jones Memorial La Casa de los Gatos, – a bright, cozy, cat-only domain opening June 13.
Previously, the cats in our care either shared space with dogs, or were frequently moved around our 4 acre campus as they were cared for or adopted. As Animal Humane concludes Phase IV of Project Humane, a 5 million dollar campaign to improve our facilities and quality of life for homeless pets in our care, we are excited to open our newest facility. La Casa de los Gatos offers several features that make this newly renovated building exactly what a cat wants: a calm, quiet, dog-free zone. These include:
-All things cat under one roof, minimizing stress on our feline residents by greatly reducing cross-campus journeys during their stay.
-New cat condos with a darkened portion, which allows cats to either interact with visitors or take a short cat nap.
-Two bonding rooms for new families to meet their prospective kitty.
-Two kitten rooms with toys and climbing structures to keep them active and socialized.
-A secluded, restful room for cat treatment.
-A behavior modification suite for fractious and fearful cats during their work with our specialists.
-An isolated ringworm treatment ward in which the air is cleansed by ultraviolet light.
-An on-site store with each of an adopter’s initial cat needs.
-An Adoptions office, staffed by an advisor who can help a visitor meet the cat of his or her dreams and facilitate an adoption on the spot.
During its opening weekend, Animal Humane will celebrate by offering $50 kitten adoption specials and a free collar and customized tag with all cat adoptions. This new facility will help showcase each cat in a cheerful, relaxed setting, and help to increase the numbers of homeless cats that find their purr-fect homes!
Through Project Humane, Animal Humane New Mexico aspires to save more lives. In part, we are accomplishing this by providing safe, calm housing that also promotes or restores health, and provides the highest level of care for our pets. The opening of La Casa de los Gatos signals that we are incredibly close to completing Project Humane, and concluding our transformation into one of the top animal shelters in the nation.
