Today, Mayor Richard J. Berry honored Lisa Faith for her passionate efforts to bring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education to Albuquerque’s youth. Faith was nominated by her peers for her positive and patient attitude as a teacher working with at-risk youth to introduce them to this interesting subject matter. Faith focuses on what level she can meet her students at and goes out of her way to connect them with every opportunity and resource that Albuquerque has to offer.
Lisa Faith is a 6th grade Humanities teacher at Garfield STEM Middle School and the site coordinator for the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program. For the last 11 years, she has worked tirelessly to connect students, regardless of their situation or background, to education that makes sense to them.
Last April, Faith coordinated an event to get 60 of her students to participate in Microsoft’s Digi Camps at the Epicenter. The students were able to connect with Microsoft Employees, participate in hands-on computer and technology workshops, and were introduced to career paths in technology. When Faith was asked why she became a teacher, she simply stated, “Because I love it.”
“It is teachers like Ms. Faith that help motivate our youth to set goals, solve problems and work hard,” said Mayor Berry. “Passionate teachers continue to engage our youth and give them the skills needed to have bright futures. I have no doubt that many of her students will grow up to earn STEM jobs and owe it to their middle school teacher who believed in them and got them interested in education.”
Digi Camps have been made possible through a partnership between the City of Albuquerque, Microsoft, and Albuquerque Public Schools with generous technological support from the Cinco Amigos. This international event was able to come to Albuquerque for its second year in a row this past April. During the event, middle school students get to interact with Microsoft employees to gain digital literacy and exposure to careers in business and technology.
