Yesterday was a hallmark day for downtown Albuquerque: the DowntownABQ MainStreet Initiative announced a significant grant from Southwest Airlines for placemaking initiatives on Civic Plaza. This Heart of the Community grant, which provides $100,000 for programming and amenities and an additional $100,000 in professional support from Project for Public Spaces and Edelman, will add vibrancy, color, and community to downtown’s doorstep.
Albuquerque is just one of 6 other cities selected for this prestigious grant that is made in partnership with the Project for Public Spaces. Yesterday’s launch at Earth Day featured new colorful tables and chairs and a volunteer planting day to plant all the planters at Civic Plaza. (And, a working fountain, thanks to SMG!) And that’s just the beginning! Stay on the lookout for other public meetings that will help inform what other amenities and programming our community would like to see. MainStreet thanks its grant partners SMG, the managers of the Convention Center and of Civic Plaza, for helping administer this investment back into the downtown community.
