Free Family Night at the Museums

Albuquerque, Community, Education

Untitled1Free Family Night at the Museums focuses in on innovative early education approach Wednesday, October 1, 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. at the Natural History and Science Museum.

Family Night at the Museums! will focus in on an important topic for our families in New Mexico: how to ensure the intellectual and creative development of our young children. The free night for families is a valuable opportunity for families to view educational exhibits and experience fun, hands-on activities with their children, while learning about innovative early education approaches. This event will take place at the NM Museum of Natural History and Science and ¡Explora! On October 1, from 5:30 to 8:00 pm.

Family Night features the internationally renowned, traveling exhibit “Wonder of Learning: The Hundred Languages of Children,” which features a collection of interactive displays, photos and videos that provide insight into the many ways young children think, interact and construct views of their world. The Wonder of Learning exhibit explores the innovative and impactful approaches to early learning and development used in Reggio Emilia, Italy, which have become renowned worldwide.

“Access to high-quality early childhood education resources is a very critical issue in New Mexico right now,” says Baji Rankin, Executive Director of the NMAEYC, one of the hosting organizations of the Wonder of Learning Exhibit. “And dynamic and quality early education programs like the Reggio Emilia approach ensure the intellectual and creative development of our children, which is key to their futures as lifelong learners and innovators. We hope families will visit the exhibit and explore some of the innovative, Reggio-inspired practices that encourage children to express their creativity and foster their imagination while they simultaneously learn important early skills in reading, math and science.”

Parents and their children are invited to experience hands-on activities, view the exhibit and enjoy the refreshments provided on October 1. Activities include: Reusable Resources, playing with and investigating recycled and collectible materials; Ray of Light, playing with color, transparent plastic, shadows and paper on light tables and overhead projectors; and Dialogue with nature, playing with and transforming stones, leaves, branches and other natural materials. In addition, children and families will have access to all the wonderful hands-on activities at the ¡Explora! museum.

Families who explore the exhibit will be entered into a raffle to win Reggio learning materials and more. The Wonder of Learning exhibit will be at the Natural History Museum until November 30, when it will travel to New York City.
