Feat for Justice

mt whitneyHave you heard about Feat for Justice 2015? Three New Mexico men are hiking to raise money for Veterans legal services in the state!  Matthew Vance, Pawel Listwan and Paul Haidle will trek 72 rigorous miles in 72 hours along the High Sierra Trail in Sequoia National Park in Southern California.  The hike will also include the summit of Mt. Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 at 14,505 feet!  This hike typically takes avid hikers 8 days to complete, but these guys want to make it extreme in an effort to support the extremity of what our Veterans have endured during their service, and what many face as returning citizens.

Feat for Justice 2015 will benefit two legal services programs that serve Veterans in New Mexico; the Veterans Civil Legal Clinic and the Veterans Justice Project.

The Veterans Civil Legal Clinic is run by the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of New Mexico.  It is a monthly pro bono legal event for VA-enrolled Veterans in New Mexico, where New Mexico attorneys, some of whom are veterans themselves, provide free, quality legal advice in civil matters such as Bankruptcy, Landlord/Tenant Issues, Foreclosure, Employment, Consumer Rights and Family Law, including Divorce, Child Support, Custody and Visitation. The clinic also partners with the New Mexico Veterans Affairs Health Care System to offer a variety of non-legal services to veterans that attend the clinic. The Veterans Civil Legal Clinic is held the second Tuesday of the month at: New Mexico Veterans Memorial – 1100 Louisiana Boulevard SE – Albuquerque, NM 87108.

The Veterans Justice Project is a program of New Mexico Legal Aid.  The VJP serves veterans in New Mexico who are experiencing or at risk of becoming homeless.  Veterans who have experienced trauma often face barriers when trying to access services. Unmet legal needs are a major reason that Veterans become homeless.  The VJP provides free legal advice, representation, and referrals on a variety of civil legal issues including: Child Support, Debt Collection, Housing Issues, Veterans’ Benefits, Healthcare, Government Benefits, and Discharge Upgrades. Veterans in need of services can call 505-243-7871 within Albuquerque, or toll-free: 866-416-1922.
