Farm to Frame

JosePhotographs by Vendors from the Santa Fe Southside Farmers’ Market

In 1968, a group of local farmers founded the Santa Fe Farmers’ Market to bring the freshest locally-produced fruits and vegetables to Santa Fe citizens. The organization created the Southside Market in service of this mission, ensuring that all Santa Feans had access to the bounty of northern New Mexico. The organization renewed its commitment to the Southside Market in 2013, moving it to a site adjacent to Santa Fe’s food deserts, areas where most residents live a mile or more from the closest grocery store. The market also increased its reach by partnering with La Familia Medical Center, which is dedicated to increasing access to healthy food for its’ patient population and Southside residents.

During the Summer of 2014, 3 vendors at the Southside Market participated in an informal photography course facilitated by a Community Health Worker from La Familia Medical Center. Vendors learned about basic photographic techniques, then made photographs and wrote captions in response to prompts about the connection between local food and our health. Our hope is to promote healthy lifestyles through sharing the stories of these vendors.

We hope this project helps you get to know your farmers and learn about the hard work that they do. Visit the Southside Market in the parking lot of the Santa Fe Place Mall, July through September, and say hello!

Many thanks to the photographers for their hard work and dedication to the Southside Market: Rocio Alcantar, Jose Antonio Serrano and Augustin Orozco.

This project was made possible through the collaboration of: La Familia Medical Center, The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market Institute, The Santa Fe Farmers’ Market, the New Mexico Farmers’ Marketing Association and the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.
