Over the past month Heading Home has been working with Cottonwood Mall to host a virtual Baby Shower, collecting items for Heading Home clients who are expecting a new addition. At this time about seven Heading Home families have just had a baby or will soon be having a baby. After hearing about this significant need, the Albuquerque Area Firefighters Random Acts group joined the effort. Firefighter’s from Station 1, the neighboring fire station to Heading Home’s downtown office, delivered a baby crib, baby carrier and diapers for mother-to-be, Jenny.
“Expecting your first child brings a whirlwind of anticipation and anxiety. We really wanted to show our support for Jenny and her partner as they go through this exciting time in their lives. We knew Jenny was eager to set-up her ‘nest’ in preparation, but that they didn’t have the means to purchase all the items needed,” said Steve Vaughan.
Cottonwood Mall also set-up collection bins throughout the mall which were quickly overflowing with baby clothing, blankets and supplies. All of the families will be able to benefit from the generous amounts of donated clothing.
Jenny and her partner were housed through Albuquerque Heading Home, an collective impact initiative run through Heading Home, in 2013. Her little baby boy is due on March 2, 2016. In a thank you letter to Heading Home, she said, “To the wonderful people of Heading Home: Thank you for the help and support you have provided to Chris and I. First getting us off the streets and into an apt [apartment]. And now with helping us gather much needed baby items and furniture as we await the arrival of our first baby together. Your generous support and kindness is a great blessing!”
Items like cribs, car seats, carriers and bath supplies are still needed. To make a furniture donation call Heading Home at (505) 344-2323, to make a financial donation visit HeadingHome.org and click on “donate”.
